Meknes

Meknes is a city located in the northwest of Morocco, about 130 km (81 mi) east of the capital city of Rabat. It has a population of over 535,000 people. Meknes is one of the four Imperial Cities of Morocco, along with Fez, Marrakech and Rabat. Meknes has a rich history, it was founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids and became an important city under the rule of the Alaouite dynasty in the 17th century. The city’s golden age was during the reign of Moulay Ismaïl, who ruled from 1672 to 1727, during his rule he turned Meknes into a powerful imperial city with impressive fortifications and grand palaces. One of the main attraction of Meknes is the Medina, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and features a mix of traditional Moroccan architecture and Andalusian-style buildings. The city is also home to the Bab Mansour gate, which is one of the most beautiful gates in Morocco, and the Heri es-Souani, a large granary and stable complex which is considered one of the most impressive architectural achievements in Morocco. Meknes is also known for its agricultural production, particularly olives and wine, it’s also a great place to learn about traditional pottery and ceramics.
