A City Where History Comes Alive

THE CITY OF LOVE: TIPS TO TRAVEL MARRAKECH

Ben Youssef Madersa-25 Tips for your First Trip to Marrakech, Morocco www.casualtravelist.com

Few cities can spark the imagination like Marrakech. Berber, Arab, and French influences make this UNESCO World Heritage Site a lasting attraction. With the fanaticism of the beautiful Medina, beautiful Moorish architecture, and some of the best cuisine in the world, it’s no wonder that more people are visiting Marrakech than ever before. Whether you TRAVEL Marrakech ( ch ) or Marrakesh ( sh )(both acceptable), visiting the red city of Morocco is sure to be an experience you will never forget. At the very least, Marrakech is magnificent, with its sights, smells and flavors overwhelming the senses; but with these Marrakech day trips, you can find the best activities in Marrakech and make your first trip an unforgettable memory.

Marrakech is a place travelers love or hate. But it’s also one of those places, you have to adjust your expectations accordingly and set it up somewhere else. I love Marrakech.

In fact, since my first visit to Marrakech, I have returned to Marrakech twice and I still feel like I need to go back to experience more.

Read my tips and things to do before going to Marrakech to avoid disappointment. I hope you fall in love with this city as much as I do.

TRANSPORTATION IN MARRAKESH

Flights to Marrakech arrive at Menara Airport (RAK). A valid passport is required for entry into Morocco currently, for the United States, Canada and most of European Countries; No visa required for stays of less than 90 days

Taxis or car rentals Marrakech, but it is best to coordinate transportation with your hotel. If you live in Medina, please note that cars cannot take you directly to your accommodation through the narrow streets. Your raid team or hotel can arrange for a staff member to meet you at the drop off point and accompany you to your destination.

CURRENCY IN MOROCCO

In Marrakech DAY TRIP, cash is king because only resorts, raids, some restaurants, and some shops accept credit cards. ATMs are hard to find in Medina (easier to find in newer towns), so the best way is to change money at the airport (this can be done for free). Some raids and resorts will also trade currency for you. The official currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD), and the current exchange rate is around 9 MAD / 1 USD.

TRIPPING IN MARRAKECH

Morocco has a great incline civilization. During day trip Marrakech anyone who helps you (whether you need help or not). Be certain to bring lots of change and little bills.

WOMEN CLOTHING

Female travel in Marrakech- 25 Tips for your First Trip to Marrakech, Morocco www.casualtravelist.com

As a woman travel to Marrakech, I have never felt insecure. Although many women visit us and have good experiences, it is not uncommon to hear women receiving unnecessary attention or boos. Marrakech tends to accept more Western clothing, but since Morocco is a Muslim country, women are advised to dress conservatively. So what should I wear in Morocco? This means you have to cover your knees and shoulders (save the sleeveless top for Miss Ibiza). Most of the time I wear loose T-shirts and long pants or skirts, if it’s cold at night, I wear a scarf or scarf. Closed-toed shoes are also a good idea, as donkeys and other animals (and what they leave behind) are common in the central region.

MARRAKECH’S WEATHER

25 Tips for your First Trip to Marrakech, Morocco www.casualtravelist.com

Marrakech is a popular destination with sunny almost all year round. Summers (June to September) are very hot and temperatures approach 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but winters are cold and nighttime temperatures can drop as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit. March, May, September, and October are generally comfortable and temperatures reach the 70’s and 80’s.

SHOPPINGS IN MARRAKECH

Shopping in the souks of Marrakech-25 Tips for your First Trip to Marrakech, Morocco www.casualtravelist.com

While I don’t usually have a lot of buyers during my travels, TRIP Marrakech is one of the few places I’d like to buy more. Morocco has a rich artisan tradition. We could see that the open air market wasn’t the typical ‘Made in China’ but full of leather (handmade shoes for $18) beautiful metal items, colorful ceramics, and handmade rugs.

BUYING MOROCCAN RUGS

Buying a Moroccan rug in Marrakech-25 Tips for your First Trip to Marrakech, Morocco www.casualtravelist.com

When I TRIP to Marrakech, my intention to buy carpets was zero.

Now I have Moroccan rugs. The tour guide took us to the co-op. I was full of anticipation. Had a sip of mint tea, watched the demonstration, and moved on. I don’t know if it’s an intricate Berber shape or the softness of camel fur, but I can quickly get out and know that I’m the owner of a Moroccan carpet, which I like very much. The quality of this handmade bell rug far surpasses that of any commercial rug you have ever owned. You can find carpets of various sizes and qualities in the outdoor market, and you can negotiate or buy carpets with co-operatives that guarantee fair wages to craftsmen.

MOROCCON LANGUAGE

The official languages of Morocco are Modern Standard Arabic and Amazegh (Berber), and many Moroccans speak French. Most of the people I know speak English, but it’s always a good idea to travel anywhere and learn a few words in the local language. Arabic words are common.

LOSE YOUR WAY

The Medina, Marrakech-25 Tips for your First Trip to Marrakech, Morocco www.casualtravelist.com

With few winding streets and signs to the medina, you’re much more likely to lose your way at a particular time. The paper map provided by the hotel will be immediately visible to tourists. A better option is to use Google Maps to download offline maps. Beware of unnecessary path suggestions (see scams above). If you should ask for directions, the best way is to ask the owner or cafeteria employee.

PHOTOS IN MARRAKECH

Traveling as a woman in Marrakech-25 Tips for your First Trip to Marrakech, Morocco www.casualtravelist.com

The scenery and colors of TRIP Marrakech are attractive to photographers, but before you start taking non-stop photos. Keep in mind that many people in Marrakech are reluctant to take photos of themselves or their goods. In fact, I see numerous symbols in the outdoor market demanding that the photos be banned. Most importantly, if the answer is no, ask permission to take pictures and maintain respect.

Imagine a city where ancient traditions meet modern energy, a place where time seems to slow down and let you truly experience a new culture. That’s Marrakech, Morocco! Boasting a rich heritage that stretches back nearly 1,000 years, this vibrant city is a feast for the senses.

Jemaa el-Fnaa Square: A Must-See Cultural Hub

The heart of Marrakech’s magic lies in Jemaa el-Fnaa Square. As the sun dips below the horizon, the square explodes with life. The air fills with the aroma of sizzling spices and delicious Moroccan food wafting from bustling food stalls. Snake charmers weave their spells, acrobats defy gravity, and Gnawa musicians fill the air with enchanting melodies. Storytellers weave tales, henna artists decorate hands with intricate designs, and fortune-tellers peek into your future – all adding to the captivating atmosphere. Jemaa el-Fnaa is an unforgettable experience that will leave you wide-eyed and wanting more.

Festivals: Celebrate Moroccan Culture

Marrakech isn’t just about history; it’s a city that loves to celebrate! Throughout the year, vibrant festivals paint the town red (or rather, all sorts of colors!). In December, the prestigious Marrakech International Film Festival brings together the biggest names in cinema for a star-studded event. But if you’re looking for a taste of authentic Moroccan culture, don’t miss the Marrakech Popular Arts Festival held mid-year. Traditional music fills the air, captivating dances erupt in the streets, and lively performances showcase the heart and soul of Morocco. It’s a joyous celebration that will leave you smiling from ear to ear.

Relax and Soak Up the Local Charm

Marrakech isn’t just about dazzling displays; it also invites you to slow down and embrace the local way of life. Cozy cafes line charming squares and verdant parks, providing the perfect spots to relax and soak up the atmosphere. Sip on fragrant mint tea, a Moroccan specialty, and watch the world go by. Strike up a conversation with friendly locals and experience the true warmth of Moroccan hospitality.
